What is Active Release Technique?
Active Release Technique, or A.R.T. is a kind of chiropractic therapy designed to treat soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves. ART is used to address a wide range of conditions caused by overused or injured muscles.
It involves massage-like movements rather than spinal adjustments to target muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia and treat musculoskeletal disorders. The technique focuses on breaking up adhesions which can be caused by overuse, injuries, trauma or poor posture.
Conditions Treated by Active Release Technique
ART is particularly effective for treating various common conditions, including:
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Tennis and golfer’s elbow
Headaches
Strain and sprain injuries
Plantar fasciitis
Headaches
Knee problems. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
What is the difference between Massage Therapy and Active Release Technique?
The active release technique is a manual therapy that combines gentle pressure and active movement to reduce adhesion pain in the muscle and connective tissue. Massage therapy generally uses static pressure and very passive movements to release muscle tension.
How does Active Release Technique work?
ART combines manual pressure with movement. At every treatment, the chiropractors use their hands to evaluate texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, nerves and ligaments. Specific tension is applied to the abnormal tissue with specific active patient movements, breaking down scar tissue and adhesions that develop from repetitive strain or injury.
